Applying acrylic patches take a little bit of training and slightly different approach than more traditional material like leather. Combined with their need for more heat, time and pressure we'lre going to give you all the tips to get the best results for your press (especially when using Lonestar Adhesive Acrylic Panels).
Single Heat Presses (Vevor etc)
- Start by placing your hat on the lower platen and ensuring there is no space between the back of your hat and the platen.
- Pre-Press the hat for 30-35 seconds at 320 oF.
- Position the patch on the preheated section and close the press for 45-60 seconds at $320.
Dual Heated Presses (IQ360, Branding Iron, etc)
- Lower your top temperture from the recommended setting down to 240-260. Leave the bottom heat at 320.
- Close the lid and "pre-press" the patch area for 45 seconds, and then place the patch where you want it while pressing down for a second.
- Close the press completely and let cook 30-35 seconds. This two stage heated approach at a cooler temp will enhance the adhesive effectiveness while working to reduce leakage of adhesive from the edges.
Cooling & Cure Time (This Matters More Than People Think)
After pressing, do not flex or test the patch immediately.
-
Let the hat sit flat and undisturbed for 3–5 minutes
-
Full adhesive cure happens as it cools, not while it’s hot
-
Premature flexing is one of the top causes of edge lift
Pro tip: A patch that feels loose hot often locks in perfectly once cooled.
Things to Consider
- Ensure your patches are dry, clean and free of any debris before pressing. Ensure your pressing sheet is clean also.
- If the patch is coming up on the edges (sometimes typical, especially for larger patches). Simply close the lid and repress again.
- There is a pressure sweet spot that helps eliminate the adhesive ooze and retaining good adhesion.
Acrylic patches reward patience and consistency. Once your press is dialed in, results become repeatable, clean, and rock-solid—regardless of press brand or price point.
